CPU design window as of 0.2.7

The microprocessor is currently the only type of hardware you can design and sell.

It becomes available after researching 'CPU Development' in Research & Development.

Level

You receive experience for every released CPU, the higher rated the CPU, the more experience. You gain one level after getting 100 experience. Higher CPU levels decrease design time and are necessary to unlock new technologies.

Architecture

Architectures are said to release with version zero point three and any traces of them are simply placeholders - they have no effect.

Clock Speed

Clock speed mainly affects a CPU's performance. Higher speeds usually mean more performance, lower stability[1], and higher build.

The lowest possible clock speed is 100 kHz, and 200 kHz is the default maximum after researching CPU Development.

Currently the maximum clock speed is 4.11 GHz, achievable with 100% build quality on a 1086 pin PGA (or better) in a 45 nm technological process.

  1. Stability is calculated relative to maximum and minimum clock speeds of the used tech process.

Core

Cores were added in 0.2.8. There are 6 selectable core technologies in the game; Single-core is always available while the 5 other ones have to be researched (see: R&D).

The Multi-core enhancement technology improves all cores (including single-core) after researched, mainly reducing design time and improving stability and performance.

Package

Package selection as of 0.2.8

There are 45 packages to choose from. DIP14 is available by default after researching CPU Development, PLCC24 is available after researching DIP48, and PGA48 unlocks after researching PLCC84.

Below is a list of all researchable packages. Note that 'cost' and 'time' refer to design cost and design time respectively.

Explanation of the 'max core' property:

  • 0 equals Single-core,
  • 1 is Experimental dual-core,
  • 2 is Basic dual-core,
  • 3 is Dual-core,
  • 4 is Triple-core,
  • 5 is Quad-core

and so on.

Build Quality

The build quality is adjustable with a slider and can range from 50% to 100%. It affects the maximum clock speed (50% build quality is 66.66% clock frequency, 100% amounts to 103% max clock), the build stat of your CPU (50% build quality is 90%, 100% is 100% build), and the unit cost of your CPU.
